A non-invasive imaging test used to measure bone mineral density

A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, sometimes called DXA) is a quick, safe, and non-invasive imaging test used to measure bone mineral density (BMD). It is widely regarded as the gold standard for diagnosing conditions such as osteoporosis and for evaluating an individual’s risk of fractures. The scan uses very low-dose X-rays to assess bone strength, most commonly in the lower spine and hips.

The procedure itself is simple and comfortable. Similar to a standard X-ray, you lie on your back for around 10–15 minutes while a scanning arm passes gently over your body. It is completely painless and not enclosed, making it suitable for those who may feel uneasy in confined spaces. Radiation exposure is minimal—lower than what you would experience during a short-haul flight.

In addition to bone health assessment, DEXA scans can also be used for detailed body composition analysis. This is particularly valuable for athletes and sports teams, helping to measure fat and muscle mass, support injury prevention strategies, and monitor rehabilitation progress.
